How to Create and Use an ESET SysRescue Bootable USB

Creating an ESET SysRescue bootable USB lets you scan and clean an infected PC without booting its compromised operating system. This guide gives a clear, step-by-step process to download the rescue image, create a bootable USB, boot from it, and perform a scan and cleanup.

What you need

  • A working Windows PC with internet access
  • A USB flash drive (minimum 4 GB; backup its contents first)
  • Administrative rights on the PC used to create the USB

1. Download the ESET SysRescue image

  1. Visit ESET’s official Rescue ISO download page (search for “ESET SysRescue ISO” via your browser).
  2. Download the latest SysRescue ISO file to your PC.

2. Download a USB creation tool

  1. Download a bootable-USB creation utility that supports ISO images, such as Rufus (for Windows) or balenaEtcher (cross-platform).
  2. Install or run the tool.

3. Create the bootable USB

Using Rufus (steps are similar in other tools):

  1. Insert the USB drive and open Rufus.
  2. In Rufus, select your USB device.
  3. Click “SELECT” and choose the downloaded ESET SysRescue ISO.
  4. Leave partition scheme and target system defaults (for most modern PCs use GPT for UEFI; for older BIOS-only systems use MBR).
  5. File system: leave as FAT32 or the tool’s default.
  6. Click “START” and confirm erasing the USB. Wait until the process finishes and close Rufus.

Using balenaEtcher:

  1. Open Etcher, select the ISO, choose the USB drive, and click “Flash.” Wait until complete.

4. Boot the infected PC from the USB

  1. Insert the SysRescue USB into the infected computer.
  2. Power on and enter the boot menu or BIOS/UEFI (common keys: F12, F11, Esc, F2, Del check your PC’s startup prompt).
  3. Select the USB device and boot from it.
  4. SysRescue will load into a Linux-based rescue environment.

5. Update virus signatures (if available)

  1. After SysRescue starts, connect the PC to the internet if possible (network options are usually available in the menu).
  2. Look for an option to update the virus signature database and run it so the latest detections are available.

6. Scan and clean the system

  1. Choose a scanning mode: quick scan (faster, targets common areas) or full/system scan (thorough, scans all files and partitions).
  2. Start the scan. Monitor detections in the interface.
  3. For each detection, choose the recommended action (quarantine or clean/delete). Quarantine is safer if you’re unsure.
  4. After the scan completes, review the log for actions taken.

7. Post-scan steps

  1. Reboot the PC into its normal OS and check system behavior.
  2. Run a secondary scan inside the normal OS with an up-to-date antivirus to confirm cleanliness.
  3. Restore any files from quarantine only if you are certain they are safe.
  4. Update the OS and installed software to close vulnerabilities.

Troubleshooting tips

  • USB not in boot menu: ensure USB is formatted correctly and the image was written successfully; try a different USB port or recreate the USB.
  • No network access in SysRescue: try a different network cable or check BIOS/UEFI settings for network adapters; Wi‑Fi may need manual setup.
  • Persistent infections: consider backing up personal files (scan backups) and performing a clean OS reinstall if malware remains.

Safety and backup

  • Always back up important data before performing major cleanups or OS reinstalls.
  • Use quarantine rather than immediate deletion if unsure about a file’s legitimacy.
  • Keep your rescue media updated by periodically downloading the latest ISO and recreating the USB.

Following these steps will let you create a reliable ESET SysRescue bootable USB and use it to remove malware from systems that cannot boot normally or are otherwise compromised.
